Melbourne’s Albert Park Circuit inspires a slot car racing track

Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne is renowned as a premier motor racing venue, enriching the city’s strong sporting culture.

This year marked the 20th anniversary since the Albert Park Circuit took over from the Adelaide Street Circuit as the host of Australian racing, further cementing Melbourne as Australia’s sporting capital.

The Albert Park race track is a street circuit that runs around picturesque Albert Park Lake, lined with towering palm trees, and is used annually to host the Formula One Australian Grand Prix, V8 Supercars Challenge and other associated races.

Albert Park and the Grand Prix

The Albert Park Circuit is erected two months prior to the Australian Grand Prix weekend and typically hosts the first event of the season. Impressively, the Grand Prix is the oldest surviving motor racing competition held in Australia – it has taken place 79 times since it first ran at Phillip Island in 1928.

The original Albert Park Circuit opened in November 1953 and the first Grand Prix comprised only Australian competitors. At the time, racing occurred in an anti-clockwise direction.  When the Albert Park Circuit re-launched on March 7, 1996 after renovations, racing changed direction to clockwise.

At 5.3km, the race track winds around Albert Park Lake and is known for its smooth, fast surface. The Australian Grand Prix is completed over 58 laps, with the circuit consisting of 16 turns. The Albert Park Circuit is no stranger to fast movement and has recorded speeds greater than 250km/h. Retired German racing driver Michael Schumacher holds the lap record with a time of 1:24:125.

Outside of racing season, the roads of the Albert Park Circuit are open to the public and make for a rather scenic drive.
